benefits of yoga

Yoga has multifold benefits and there is no doubt about it. But when research studies are conducted, these benefits of yoga become proven beyond question. From yoga for back pain and yoga for stress relief to yoga for anxiety and mental health, the evidence is compelling. Here I present some of the research studies conducted on effects of yoga in the corporate world.

You will be amazed to see evident results that yoga can produce which no other practice can do.

1. Yoga for Back Pain Relief

A 2012 British study published in the journal Occupational Medicine proved the point with an eight-week study that drew participants from a government office. It gave one group a single 50-minute yoga class a week while allowing a control group to sit on their keisters. Surprise, surprise. The yoga group reported significantly less back pain and lower stress, as well as greater self-assurance, serenity and concentration.

2. Yoga for Burnout Prevention

A 2015 study published in Workplace Health and Safety found that nurses who performed a weekly yoga session for eight weeks experienced enormous reductions in warning signs for burnout. Among the benefits are higher levels of self-care, less emotional exhaustion and a reduced tendency toward depersonalization in their contact with patients.

3. Yoga Health Benefits: Less Hostility and Aggression

Any workplace that functions harmoniously is likely to be more productive. A controlled study in the journal Ayu of 160 workers at an engineering firm in India, yoga was shown to reduce hostility and aggression. In the study, half studied and practiced yoga for one hour daily, while the other half received lectures in management theory and engaged in light exercise for the same amount of time. At the end of 10 weeks, the yoga group showed significantly improved scores for positivity and lowered scores for aggression and counterproductive work activities compared to the control group. Yoga has also been shown to lower levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) as well as perceived stress in ways likely to make for a more serene workplace.

4. Yoga Benefits: Less Absenteeism at Work

Stress in the workplace diminishes performance and can lead to physical injury, including back pain, neck and shoulder tension and carpal tunnel syndrome, and that costs money. Yoga at the workplace has been shown to reduce absenteeism from sickness or other physical problems, to boost company morale and improve communication skills among employees. In addition, employees who took lunchtime yoga classes at two office sites in California reported a steep decline in stress and musculoskeletal pain.

5. Yoga Health Benefits for Type 2 Diabetes

A study was conducted showing the effect of Yoga on reversing type 2 diabetes in elderly women. They were given 12 weeks of yoga protocol to follow and the results were amazing. Every woman experienced great transformation and diabetes was not an issue for them anymore. Along with yoga they were also suggested some lifestyle related changes.

6. Yoga and Mental Health of Employees

There was a research conducted with around 90 individuals where they were made to attend 16 weeks of yoga classes in their gyms and the results shocked everyone. Their stress level came down by 60% and their psychological health improved significantly.

7. Yoga for Anxiety and Stress Relief

The role of yoga in improving the signs and symptoms of stress and anxiety is remarkable. Many subjects of the study noted a significant decrease in stress and/or anxiety symptoms when a yoga regimen was implemented. Many of them reported biochemical and physiological markers of stress and anxiety, but yielded inconsistent support of yoga for relief of stress and anxiety.
